Planning and Carrying Out a Safe Move

Moving is often a strenuous and stressful time especially when doing it without the help of professional movers. There is a risk damaging your stuff due to improper packing. There is also the risk of injuring yourself or another member of your moving party. Here are some simple steps to help make your move more enjoyable.

  1. Do a thorough job of packing. Don’t overload the boxes. Most boxes have a maximum weight of around 50 pounds. Cheap moving boxes may have a lower maximum weight. Also, consider who is responsible for moving the boxes. Make sure not to exceed what that person can safely move without injury.
  2. Make sure your body is prepared. Moving is a lot of hard work even with help. Back injuries are very common from improper lifting. Start the day by doing some whole body stretches to prepare your body for the lifting.
  3. Be sure to dress right for the move. Wear loose clothing which allows for free movement without the risk of getting stuck or caught on objects during the move. Wear closed shoes with a good grip and ankle support without heals.
  4. Be careful how you lift those heavy boxes. Always lift with your knees instead of your back. The best way to do that is to bend your knees with your waist pushed back.
  5. Use appropriate equipment for moving heavy objects. Renting a dolly can make it easier to move large appliances as well as boxes. The boxes can be stacked on the dolly then secured with a strap. Using gloves will protect your fingertips and provide better grip.
  6. Be aware of potential dangers while vision is impaired. Look around before you start moving the boxes to identify low hanging branches or uneven sidewalks. Check the weather forecast a few days before in order to be prepared for inclement weather or high wind.
  7. Be prepared for emergencies with a first aid kit on hand. Most people have emergency supplies in their homes but they may be packed away during a move. Having a small first aid kit on hand with ointments, band aids, and painkillers can save precious time in the event someone becomes injured. If you are moving to an unfamiliar area, it might also be helpful to enter emergency numbers into a cell phone just in case.
  8. Have a safe place for small children and pets during the move. The best plan is to find a babysitter to keep the children to avoid injuries. Put your pets in animal crates and then secure them in a safe place while you are moving.
  9. Hiring someone to move heavy objects is a good way to protect against injury. They are trained in the correct way to lift and usually offer protection if an item is damaged. Some items need to be dismantled or disconnected before moving so professional movers remove this stress as well.

Moving can be stressful and strenuous but you can contain the danger by following a few simple steps. Safety is always the most important part in a move. If you do not believe you can move safely on your own, consider hiring a professional especially for large objects.
